About the work

Veronica worked in housekeeping at Montsalvat while I was volunteering there in the early 2020s. She joined the group of people who agreed to be photographed for this portrait series, giving me the opportunity to include someone whose role was largely behind the scenes.

I was interested in Veronica's strong features and direct gaze. They gave me an expressive face to work with and suited the layered drawing process that I was beginning to develop.

The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.

About the print

Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
