About the work
Tony volunteered as a gardener at Montsalvat for many years and only retired in 2025. He is still a familiar face around the grounds, especially on the ride-on mower.
Some time after this portrait was completed, Tony came into the tool shed looking rather pleased with himself. Visitors to Montsalvat had recognised him from the limited edition prints of his portrait that were on sale in the gift shop. I think we were both quietly delighted.
The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.
About the print
Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
