About the work
I met Sue while volunteering in the gardens at Montsalvat Artist Community in Victoria, Australia, in the early 2020s. An artist-in-residence at Montsalvat, Sue designs and makes clothing and other textile pieces by hand, which she sells through a small shop she runs with her sister.
Sue always wore beautiful but practical clothes that she had made herself. She had a calm nature and a happy face that made her a pleasure to be around. Those qualities, together with her creativity, were what first drew me to her as a subject.
The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.
About the print
Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
