About the work

This self-portrait was the first work in my series of layered portrait drawings. I completed it to show friends at Montsalvat the direction I wanted to take with the series, hoping they would agree to sit for future portraits.

It is also the simplest drawing in the series. As the project developed, I became increasingly interested in layering, erasure and mark-making to create surfaces that suggested the passage of time and memory.

At the time, I had recently attended a workshop with Godwin Bradbeer, whose approach to process and experimentation encouraged me to push these ideas further and develop them into my own way of working.

The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.

 

About the print

Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
