About the work

I met Karin while volunteering in the gardens at Montsalvat, Victoria, in the early 2020s. She has an extensive knowledge of horticulture and was generous in sharing it with those of us working in the gardens. Although she was much younger than she appears here, I deliberately emphasised the effects of age. At the time, I was interested in drawing wrinkles and weathered skin, partly as a way of exploring the layering techniques that have since become central to my work.

The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.

 

About the print

Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
