About the work
Jo is the gentle and approachable head gardener at Montsalvat and also a practising musician. I found Jo surprisingly difficult to draw, and I made her appear much older than she was because I was still fascinated by the textures of wrinkles and weathered skin.
Jo taught me a great deal about plant propagation and the care of animals, particularly geese, guinea fowl and peacocks. Many of those lessons continue to shape how I care for the animals on my own property today.
The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.
About the print
Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
