About the work

Jean-paul is a sculptor and live-in-resident at Montsalvat in Eltham Victoria. He studied under Matcham Skipper and runs sculpture workshops in the studios onsite. When I first completed this drawing, it was much lighter in tone. As I continued working on it, I became interested in emphasising the bushranger-like character suggested by Jean-paul's beard and weathered features, gradually developing the drawing into something darker and more atmospheric.

The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.

 

About the print

Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
