About the work
Gene De Luca is a musician, songwriter and volunteer gardener at Montsalvat, and one of the most encouraging people I met there. He has always been enthusiastic about other people's creative work, readily giving his support and encouragement. Gene has also modelled for one of Jean-Paul's portrait sculpture workshops, and his willingness to help others seemed entirely in keeping with his generous nature.
This was the second drawing in my Evolving Reflections series and marked an important step in its development. The unusual viewpoint and the contrast between the darker figure and lighter background reflect the influence of a workshop I attended with Godwin Bradbeer shortly before beginning the series.
The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.
