About the work
Damien is a long-time resident artist at Montsalvat and the son of one of the founders of the artists' community. Although he has exhibited his own drawings and paintings over many years, he is a very private person.
When I photographed Damien, I asked whether he would be comfortable with a direct gaze in the finished drawing. He preferred not to be portrayed that way, so the portrait developed with his eyes turned away from the viewer.
The original drawing was built up over many layers of charcoal, ink, graphite and other materials. Between layers, I erased and sanded back sections of the surface, creating areas that became more porous and responded differently to each successive application. The process is slow and only partly predictable, allowing the materials to produce textures and marks that could never be planned in advance.
About the print
Professionally printed as an archival giclée on Hahnemühle Etching 310 gsm paper using archival pigment inks. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. No further prints will be produced after this edition has sold out.
